Board Member Julie Yang Introduces Screen Time Resolution
Board Member Julie Yang introduced an “Auditing Screen Time K-8” resolution, which was seconded by Board Member Laura Stewart and will now sit for public comment. Ms. Yang acknowledges all of the letters received from concerned parents about their children’s screen use in school as well as the Technology Committee’s work. She reads the “resolved” portions, which requires MCPS to conduct an audit of screen use to be provided to the Board no later than March 2027.

Incredible testimony was provided by parents Rebecca Holtzman, John Ocampo, and Erin Katz, joining prior testimony provided by committee members, available here.

MCPS Goes Fully Phone-Free Next School Year
Peter Moran, Chief of Schools, announced that MCPS will have an away all day personal mobile device policy for K-12 for next school year, a year ahead of when House Bill 525, the MD Phone Free Schools Act, requires it. Regulation COG-RA has already been revised to align with HB525 and is on the MCPS website. Dr. Moran said he will be working on consistent implementation of the policy and principals will be discussing this summer. We will be advocating for inaccessible storage and not a no-show policy, because the former is best for learning and earns the highest level of teacher satisfaction.
