Celebrate Black History Month—Take Home Activity Below

February is Black History Month, and in 2026 we are celebrating the national theme “A Century of Black History Commemorations.” This theme highlights how Black history has been remembered, honored, and taught for more than 100 years through schools, families, books, celebrations, and community traditions.

To help students connect to this idea, we are sending home a family activity called “Hands That Changed History.” In this activity, students will learn about an influential Black American and reflect not only on their achievements, but also on why their story continues to be remembered today. This helps students understand that history is something people actively keep alive by sharing stories and learning together.

We encourage families to focus on conversation and curiosity rather than perfection. Drawings, simple sentences, and thoughtful discussions are all wonderful ways to participate. Every family’s project will look different, and that is exactly what we want.

Completed projects will be shared throughout the school to show how we are all taking part in remembering and honoring Black history.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in learning.Sincerely,
Bells Mill PTA – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Team
