December 3 PTA General Meeting Recap

We had a wonderful general meeting of the 2019-2010 Bells Mill PTA last night. Thanks to all who attended! We again had a great showing of parents and teachers!

For those who could not make it, here is a quick recap:

  • We officially adopted South Lake Elementary as our sister school, after a successful Thanksgiving food drive that exceeded all expectations!
  • We also passed two general resolutions at the meeting:
    • Added a budget line item of $200 for expenses related to our new sister school.
    • Amended the budget line item “Speakers for Meetings” to “Meeting Expenses”, to allow that budget item to cover other meeting expenses (e.g., refreshments)
  • Ms. Abramson gave a thorough and informative demonstration, on the school’s Chromebooks, of the Benchmark reading curriculum that the school introduced this year.
  • We discussed the results of the family surveys as part of the initiative to qualify BMES as a School of Excellence.
  • Renewing the call for volunteers! Several events still need volunteers to help out, including the Read-A-Thon, STEM Night, the Talent Show, International Night, and the end-of-year BASH. The PTA has a sufficient budget to make these events a success, but we need your help to coordinate! Please get in touch with Devin or Georgia if you can help out, or email [email protected].
  • We had a brief discussion regarding parent-teacher conferences. Please note that MCPS will provide interpreters to assist with parent-teacher conference, if you can provide sufficient advance notice to your child’s teacher. Please spread the word!
  • Raymond Bell gave a helpful overview of the pending boundary study being conducted by the Montgomery County Board of Education.
    • Additional information is available at https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/publicinfo/boundary-analysis/. Public meetings to discuss the boundary study are imminent, and the PTA encourages the participation of our families in these discussions. Please plan to attend one or more of these meetings:
Gaithersburg High School, December 4 from 7-9 pm
Julius West Middle School, December 11 from 7-9 pm
White Oak Middle School, December 14 from 10 am – noon
Walter Johnson High School, January 7 from 7-9 pm
Blair High School, January 11 from 10 am – noon
Northwest High School, January 14 from 7-9 pm

We hope everyone has a great and relaxing winter break and a happy new year! We will see you at the next PTA general meeting on February 4, 2020 at 6:30 pm!
