MCCPTA: Synthetic Turf and AI Policy Resolutions

The MCCPTA will be voting on two resolutions on January 27th, 2026. The first is regarding the AI Usage Policy and second one is regarding Synthetic Turf.

Please review the provided resources on AI, Tech & Education and provide any thoughts or feedback directly to your BMES PTA Delegates (delegate@bellsmill.org). You can also review the draft resolution, slides on the purpose of the resolution, and the associated Q&A. There will be two additional Tech Committee office hours to Discuss AI Resolution that you can attend on Zoom on:
Thursday, January 15, 7:00 pm
Thursday, January 15, 9:00 pm

The second resolution is in regard to the Dangers of Synthetic Turf. Synthetic turf presents five major, data driven problems for students and communities:

  1. Cost: Synthetic turf carries high upfront costs and significant long-term expenses due to replacement, maintenance, and disposal. These costs often exceed the lifecycle cost of modern natural grass systems.
  2. Injury: Evidence shows higher rates of certain lower-extremity injuries on synthetic turf compared to natural grass, particularly for youth athletes.
  3. Toxicity: Synthetic turf systems contain plastic components and chemical additives, including PFAS and other toxic substances. These may be absorbed through skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion. This raises concerns about cumulative exposure in children.
  4. Heat: Synthetic turf routinely reaches extreme surface temperatures, creating dangerous conditions and increasing the risk of heat illness, especially during school hours and after-school programs.
  5. Disposal: Synthetic turf contributes to plastic pollution and microplastic runoff and ultimately requires disposal in landfills or incineration, creating long-term environmental and fiscal burdens.

Again, the PTA is looking for BMES community feedback and would appreciate your feedback. Please email your BMES PTA Delegates (delegate@bellsmill.org) with questions or comments.
